In 2013, anti-Roma demonstrations took place at the Máj housing estate in České Budějovice where Roma families and other underprivileged families live. That is why the students of the J.V. Jirsík Grammar School in České Budějovice taking part in the DofE Award, which includes also long-term voluntary activities, have prepared a project that aims to show that things could go differently there.

The aim of the students who have prepared the “It could be different” project is to help the Roma and other socially excluded pupils prepare for entrance examinations to grammar schools. The main goal of the project is to try to give these children a chance to gain better education, which will enable them to find better employment and place in the society. Also, trust between a grammar school student and a younger pupil can lead to the forming of a friendship and accepting of new social norms, examples and attitudes. If these pupils succeed in entering grammar schools, the grammar school students are prepared to keep helping them and involve them in the life of the J.V. Jirsík Grammar School.

This is a pilot project. If successful, its ambition is to become a national project enabling young people from the entire Czech Republic to help underprivileged children in their communities. For the DofE leaders this project can be an inspiration for the service section. If you are interested in more information about the project, you can contact DofE leader Vláďa Kojan at
